Hong Kong home title HOMES 家居巡禮 stepped inside an 1800 sq ft (saleable area) duplex in Mount Davis, Sai Wan, to tell a story about travelling far without leaving home. The owners, a married couple, had lived in Mount Davis for years, originally occupying a single floor on their own. As their two daughters arrived one after another, the space ran short, so they waited for the unit below to come onto the market, bought it, and asked Artwill Interior Design House founder Regina Kwok to connect the two levels into a home with a distinctly English air.

The plan turns on a clear logic of combining and separating. Regina sorted public and private life across the two floors: the living and dining areas, kitchen and master suite sit together on one level, with two living rooms opened up so that hosting guests and the daily rhythm of a family of four never get in each other's way. The bedrooms move to the other floor for their own quiet. The former maid's room was rebuilt into a playroom and guest room, giving the two sisters a corner of their own.

Tying the two storeys together is a staircase keyed to the scale of a larger home, laid with deep-toned timber flooring and crowned by a ceiling of patterned mouldings and gold trim that makes the rooms feel taller. The master suite is fitted with a run of wardrobes, while the master bathroom, once long and narrow, was replanned around relocated plumbing into a spa-like retreat. In its Selected Corner feature, the magazine notes that, because the owners love coffee, Regina designed a triangular display shelf for their cup collection, with room for simple parent-and-child baking together.

The material palette layers timber flooring, marble, wood veneer, baked lacquer and mirror into a calm, tactile English mood, with lighting by Tom Kirk and Aromas, joinery by Kuchen, and bathroom fittings from Kohler and Hansgrohe.
