Circle Plaza

Circle Plaza is an interior design project completed by Artwill Interior Design House in 2009, located in Hong Kong Island, a 1,500 sq. ft. unit handled by Regina Kwok and the design team across Interior Design & Build.

A 1,500-square-foot unit at Circle Plaza in Causeway Bay, an office interior design that doubles as an extension of the owner's home, for a boutique financial services firm.

The owner wanted a workplace that could also be somewhere his family came to relax, but letting work and leisure bleed into each other too freely risked a space that did neither well. The unit's real asset was its 14-foot ceiling, so we built the office up into a mezzanine. Enclosed enough to concentrate when he is inside, it keeps a large window over the rest of the unit and out to the street, so it never feels boxed in.

The owner is a serious collector, and the space beneath the mezzanine turned out to be the ideal gallery. With no direct daylight to fade the pieces, his art objects stay protected, and the underside of the mezzanine lets track lighting be repositioned freely, exactly as a gallery would. Display and storage were planned together so the collection reads as a display, not as clutter.

At the heart of the unit, where the family gathers at weekends, we set a full sofa set and coffee table facing the home theatre. With the owner's sports club nearby, we also fitted a full bathroom so he could shower and unwind here. The fitted joinery, from the mezzanine cabinetry to the display walls, was made to measure by our trusted partner factory.

The space beneath the mezzanine turned out to be the ideal gallery.
