Nelson Court

Nelson Court is an interior design project completed by Artwill Interior Design House in 2012, located in Kowloon, a 1,088 sq.ft. unit handled by Regina Kwok and the design team across Interior Design & Build.

A 1,088-square-foot flat at Nelson Court in Mong Kok, a renovation for a couple who already knew exactly what they wanted, so our job was to build their vision well.

The owners had been living here a while and came to us with a clear picture in mind, so we were glad to play more of an executional role than a creative one. They loved sharp contrast, so black and white runs throughout, though for the floor we suggested a light grey for the sake of wear and upkeep, and they were happy to take it. With the palette settled fast, we spent the real time hunting down finishing materials with surfaces worth a second look.

The one layout change they wanted was the living-room TV. Originally it sat on the short side of the rectangular room, leaving only five or six feet between a 55-inch set and the sofa, a touch close for comfort. So we enlarged the living room by folding in the study, squared off the shape, and turned the sofa ninety degrees, which pushed the viewing distance out to a far more comfortable nine feet.

The household had two more members: a pair of cats, and we planned the whole flat around them too. Almost every piece of furniture was pushed back against a wall to free up floor for the cats to circle, the storage they needed was covered or hidden so no curious paw could go clawing through it, and every decor item was mounted, with nothing loose left lying around to be knocked over. The result is a crisp black-and-white home that works just as well for two people as it does for two cats.
