The Leighton Hill

The Leighton Hill is an interior design project completed by Artwill Interior Design House in 2018, located in Hong Kong Island, a 1,482 sq. ft. unit handled by Regina Kwok and the design team across Interior Design & Build.

A 1,482-square-foot flat at The Leighton Hill in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island, an interior design and build built around timber, like a small stage set in wood.

The owner described the home he wanted almost as a theatre with timber in the lead role, so we built the palette around soft beige and white and let wood do the rest: wooden flooring, solid timber furniture, and a wooden ceiling fan made to order for him. Across a thousand-plus square feet, that gives the whole flat a cosy, slightly old-world warmth.

Leaning on one material alone can turn flat, though, and the original partitioning had a few flaws to hide. So we worked in some quiet counterpoints. A high-tactile grey art paint dresses the beam and the shoe-cabinet door at the entrance, pitched to match the floor tile so it marks out the zones and stretches the sense of space, rather than reading as a patch over a problem.

In the study, we turned the windowsill into a long desk and lined the wall beside it with shelving, so the room gained real storage and a comfortable place to work in one move. The furniture, the cabinetry, and the ceiling fan were custom-made for the flat by our trusted partner factory. It is warm, grounded residential interior design: a timber-led home in Happy Valley that feels lived-in from the first day.
