Mid-Levels Central

Mid-Levels Central is an interior design project completed by Artwill Interior Design House in 2020, located in Hong Kong Island, a 1,539 sq. ft. unit handled by Regina Kwok and the design team across Interior Design & Build.

A 1,539-square-foot apartment in Mid-Levels Central, on Hong Kong Island, designed and built around a bell-shaped floor plate that arrived with every awkward corner you could name.

There is an old saying that a room need not be large to be elegant; in modern terms, elegant really starts with being easy to use. This flat is bell-shaped, so just about every oblique angle and rounded corner you can imagine turned up in the plan. Our whole approach to the interior design was to open, connect, and make the most of those odd spots, turning the disadvantages into the home's quiet assets.

We took down the wall between the living room and study to form a semi-open, multi-function space, then split it again with a glass sliding door, so light travels right through the living area while each zone keeps its purpose. The couple pull in different directions, he likes a monotone scheme, she likes warmth, so we themed the home in grey and white, then balanced it with wood flooring and timber-faced cabinets to bring the warmth back.

The cleverest moves are in the corners no one else wanted. We turned the awkward oblique and rounded nooks into a shower area and a walk-in closet, giving the home's strangest spaces a real job to do. The fitted joinery throughout was custom-made by our trusted partner factory, which is what let each piece follow the building's unusual angles instead of fighting them.
